Manor Architecture were tasked with redesigning the former site of Rhyddings Mill site in Oswaldtwistle following on from a previous feasibility study. We reviewed the design and mix of houses to optimise the layout and design to create a scheme comprising of 37 2 and 3 bedroom houses, while ensuring an efficient, fully compliant and cost-effective layout. This focus on affordability and responsible use of space played a key role in securing planning permission in March 2024.
Understanding the site's location within the Rhyddings Conservation Area was pivotal to the project's success. Through a combination of the input from the clients appointed design team, we ensured the final scheme echoed the surrounding area's character and the choice of stone as the primary building material ensures the new development seamlessly integrates with the existing housing stock.
Beyond its aesthetic considerations, the project aimed to address a crucial need for affordable housing in the Oswaldtwistle community. MCI Developments who specialise in the delivery of affordable housing proposed dedicating 100% of the new homes to affordable tenure, making them accessible to a wider range of residents.
The council's appreciation for the design's sensitivity to the local character and its commitment to affordability resulted in a swift approval process with minimal conditions. This streamlined process paves the way for a quick commencement of construction, bringing much-needed housing to the area. The redevelopment of Rhyddings Mill exemplifies how thoughtful design and a focus on affordability can breathe new life into a neglected site. Manor Architecture's approach ensures the creation of a sustainable and inclusive community that meets the needs of residents while respecting the area's heritage.
